VR Added to Standard Stroke Rehab Care May Benefit Patients


NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Virtual-reality therapy (VRT) for stroke rehabilitation may improve outcomes, according to a Cochrane review.

“Clinicians who currently have access to virtual reality programs should be reassured that their use as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program seems reasonable, taking into account the patient’s goals, abilities, and preferences,” Dr. Kate E. Laver of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, and colleagues conclude in in Stroke, online March 2.

The report is based on a review published in the Cochrane Library last year, which itself was an update of a Cochrane review originally published in 2011 and updated in 2015.

Dr. Laver and colleagues analyzed 72 trials including 2,470 participants, with 35 studies that had been published since the 2015 update. Overall, the studies were small and the interventions varied based on treatment goals and type of program or device used, with control groups typically receiving no therapy or conventional therapy.

Based on 22 studies, the authors found VR therapy was no better than conventional therapy for improving upper limb function (standardized mean difference, 0.07). But adding VRT to usual care resulted in a statistically significant difference (SMD, 0.49; 10 studies).

Both findings were based on low-quality evidence. There were also differences for the secondary outcome of activities of daily living (SMD, 0.25).

Twenty-three studies reported on adverse events, which were “relatively mild.”

The National Health and Medical Research Council-Australian Research Council and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada supported the study.
