PARIS — Citing financial constraints, organizers have cancelled Cardiostim 2018, just months before the 40th anniversary of the electrophysiology congress.
“In spite of the extraordinary success of the congress, and the strong rate of satisfaction of the participants (87% of ‘very’ and ‘extremely’ pleased people), the pursuit of the congress in its current format and size unfortunately became impossible for 2018,” according to a news release posted on the congress website.
It noted that the decision of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) “not to renew its 12-year partnership with Cardiostim, to have its own annual congress, Europace, in March, a few months away from Cardiostim, and the impossibility for the industry to financially support this congress as well as before would have prevented Cardiostim from reaching its ambitions.”
The decision by event organizer, Reed Expositions France, to end the congress comes amid uncertainty about medical meeting attendance following a policy change fully implemented January 1 by the trade association MedTech Europe, ending direct industry support to individual healthcare professionals attending conferences and continuing medical education activities.
Cardiostim was one of the higher-profile electrophysiology meetings in the world, with the EHRA EuroPace-Cardostim 2016 congress attracting 5740 attendees from 91 countries and 60 exhibitors, according to the release.
Cardiostim was founded in 1978 by the late electrophysiology pioneer Dr Jacques Mugica and was held in Nice, France. It was acquired by Reed Expositions France in 2008.
