Uwe Reinhardt, PhD, famed health economist and the James Madison professor of political economy and of economics at Princeton University in New Jersey, died Tuesday after an as yet undisclosed illness.
His death was confirmed by Princeton University, which said more information will be forthcoming, according to news reports. Some Internet references list his age as 80.
Dr Reinhardt, born in Germany, taught health economics, comparative health systems, general microeconomics, and financial management at Princeton. He was also the codirector of the Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies at Princeton.

He had been a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences since 1978, according to Princeton’s website.
Most of his research has centered on health economics and policy in the United States and globally.
Dr Reinhardt was a president of the Association of Health Services Research, and from 1986 to 1995 he served as a commissioner on the Physician Payment Review Committee, which was established by Congress in 1986 to advise it on payment of physicians.
His work has appeared in the New York Times, the New England Journal of Medicine, the British Medical Journal, and many other publications.
One of his most recent papers, Why are Private Health Insurers Losing Money on Obamacare? , was published October 4 in the JAMA Forum.
Princeton colleague Atif Mian, PhD, wrote on Twitter today that it was “a very sad day at Princeton.
“He had a heart of gold. Having witnessed the horrid consequences of the rise of fascism in Germany early in his life, he was especially sensitive to the politics of hate, division and authoritarianism.
“When political air turned nasty in the U.S., especially toward those seen as ‘foreign’ by some, he emailed me — in his sickness — to say, ‘I hope you and your family are not touched by this madness.’ Rest in peace, my friend.”
Dr Reinhardt was known for his frank opinions and clever wit.
When asked in an interview with Vox in August last year about his assessment of where Obamacare exchanges are right now, he answered, “I always joke about it like this: If you got a bunch of Princeton undergrads to design a health care system, maybe they would come up with an arrangement like the marketplaces.”
