How Do You React to EHR Alerts?

How Do You React to EHR Alerts?

Electronic health records (EHRs) are now part of nearly all physician practices, but that doesn’t mean they like them. While most clinicians say they recognize the value of computerized patient records, they cite EHRs and the amount of time they’re forced to spend on them as one of their top stressors and a major contributor to burnout.

One major complaint about EHRs is the constant pings, rings, and dings of alerts. Physicians don’t like the number of alerts they receive and find too many of them insignificant, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. That’s why they often ignore them, the study’s authors say.

The study found that clinicians overrode 73.3% of the alerts for drug-drug interactions, patient allergies, and duplicate drugs. Most of these overrides were deemed appropriate by the researchers. However, the override and appropriate-override rates varied considerably by category. Across one category, roughly 60% of alert overrides were warranted, meaning that 40% weren’t.
